Struggling to find the perfect Christmas gift for a man who says he doesn’t need anything? We’ve put together 15 thoughtful Christmas gifts for men in Australia for 2026, from experiences and practical upgrades to meaningful gifts that could become part of the family story.

Buying Christmas gifts for men should be easy, but somehow it rarely is. Every year, the same question comes up: what do you buy a man who says he doesn’t need anything?

I have this problem every Christmas with my dad. He’s always been there for me, he’ll always make sure there’s something for me under the tree, but whenever I ask what he wants, the answer is pretty much the same: he doesn’t need anything.

For years, that meant falling back on the obvious choices. A nice bottle of Scotch. A bottle of wine. Something safe that I knew he’d enjoy, but nothing particularly memorable. Eventually I got sick of buying the same cliché gifts just because I couldn’t think of anything else.

Last year, I changed tack and bought him a fascinating book about what would happen if society had to start again from scratch. It covered everything from science and engineering to medicine, anatomy and the knowledge we’ve accumulated as humans. It was completely different from the usual presents I’d bought him, and it made me realise that the best gifts aren’t necessarily the things someone asks for. Sometimes they’re the things that make you think about that person differently.

That got me thinking about something else. My dad doesn’t really tell stories. He’s not the kind of person who will randomly sit down and start talking about what life was like when he was 20, the things he got up to when he was young, the mistakes he made, the people who shaped him or the moments that changed his life. Like a lot of men, there are probably hundreds of stories in there that have simply never been told.

And I realised that if nobody ever asks, a lot of those stories might never get passed down.

That was when the idea of giving him a journal started to mean something completely different to me. Not a diary he had to write in every night and not something that demanded he suddenly become an open book. Just somewhere he could, at his own pace, answer a question when he felt like it and document a memory or story from his life.

Over time, those individual answers could become something much bigger. A record of who he was before I knew him as Dad. Something I could read one day, something my kids could read, and perhaps something their kids could read after that. Almost like a living family tree, told through his own words.

That idea is also at the heart of what we created with Memoirs By Him. So this Christmas gift guide isn't about filling a page with random products. It's about finding gifts we'd genuinely give the men in our own lives, particularly the ones who insist they don't need anything.

Here are our picks for the best Christmas gifts for men in Australia in 2026, from meaningful keepsakes and experiences to things he'll simply love using.

1. A JOURNAL THAT BECOMES PART OF THE FAMILY STORY

We’ll get the obvious disclosure out of the way first: we created The Journal by Memoirs By Him, so of course we’re biased.

But the story above explains why we believe in it.

The Journal contains more than 220 prompts covering 10 areas of life. Rather than handing someone hundreds of blank pages and expecting them to know where to begin, the questions give them somewhere to start.

They cover childhood, memories, relationships, ambitions, health, money, values, mistakes, goals and the experiences that have made someone who they are.

And there’s no requirement to sit down and write pages at a time. He might answer one question over a coffee, leave it untouched for a fortnight and then come back to another.

For a dad or grandfather in particular, we think there’s something powerful about that. You’re giving the gift to him, but what he eventually creates could become a gift back to the entire family.

Years from now, knowing what your dad was like before he became your dad might mean far more than another bottle of Scotch ever could.

That’s the idea behind The Journal by Memoirs By Him: For every truth you haven’t said out loud yet.

2. AN EXPERIENCE YOU CAN ACTUALLY SHARE

As we get older, we’ve started appreciating gifts that give you something to do together rather than simply something else to own.

That could be tickets to a sporting event, a restaurant you’ve both wanted to try, a fishing charter, a track day, a cooking class, a round of golf or a weekend away somewhere in Australia.

The important part is choosing the experience around the person. Don’t buy a skydiving voucher for someone whose idea of the perfect Saturday is lunch overlooking the water.

An experience works because it says, “I know what you enjoy, and I want to enjoy it with you.” There’s also a good chance you’ll remember the day long after you’ve forgotten most of the physical presents you exchanged that Christmas.

3. A BOOK YOU CHOSE SPECIFICALLY FOR HIM

Last year’s gift for my dad reminded me how good a book can be when you choose it specifically for the person rather than grabbing whatever bestseller is sitting near the checkout.

Think about what genuinely fascinates him. It could be history, cars, architecture, sport, science, cooking, travel, business or the biography of someone he admires.

A $40 book chosen because you know exactly why he’ll love it can feel far more personal than a $300 gift bought because you couldn’t think of anything else.

And write something inside the cover. A few sentences explaining why you chose it can turn an ordinary book into something he keeps for the rest of his life.

4. SOMETHING FOR THE HOBBY HE NEVER STOPS TALKING ABOUT

One of the easiest ways to avoid generic gifts is to start with something the person already loves.

If he spends every weekend golfing, fishing, cooking, camping, training, cycling, working on his car, making coffee or obsessing over some hobby you barely understand, start there.

You don’t necessarily have to understand the hobby yourself. Ask one of his mates who does. They’ll probably know exactly what he’s been eyeing off or what piece of equipment would actually be useful.

It shows that you’ve paid attention to what he enjoys rather than simply searching for “gifts for men” and buying the first thing that appears.

5. A QUALITY WALLET OR CARD HOLDER

Some classic gifts are classics for a reason. A wallet works because it’s something most men use every day, but the trick is buying a genuinely good version of it.

If he’s still carrying around a bulky old wallet filled with expired cards and receipts, a quality leather card holder or slim wallet can be a surprisingly good upgrade.

Keep it simple, choose something well made and avoid excessive branding unless that’s genuinely his style. Subtle personalisation, such as his initials, can also make it feel more considered without turning it into a novelty gift.

6. GOOD HEADPHONES HE’LL USE EVERY DAY

The best practical gifts are the ones that quietly become part of someone’s daily routine, and a genuinely good pair of headphones can do exactly that.

They’re useful for travelling, commuting, training, working or simply escaping everyone else for half an hour.

This is also a good example of why you should look at what someone already owns before buying them something. If he already has an expensive pair he loves, leave them alone. If he’s still fighting with ancient headphones that barely hold a charge, you’ve probably found your Christmas present.

7. A WATCH, WATCH BOX OR TRAVEL ROLL

A watch is one of the few accessories a lot of men genuinely enjoy owning, and you don’t need to spend thousands to find something beautiful.

If he already has watches he loves, though, buying another one can be risky. A quality watch box or travel roll can actually be the better present because it complements something he already cares about.

It’s also the sort of thing many men appreciate but never quite get around to buying for themselves, which is often a good sign you’re onto a worthwhile gift.

8. A WEEKEND AWAY SOMEWHERE IN AUSTRALIA

For couples in particular, we’d seriously consider putting the Christmas present budget towards a couple of nights away instead of exchanging several smaller gifts.

It doesn’t need to involve flights or an elaborate itinerary. Find somewhere within driving distance, book somewhere great to stay, organise a good dinner and give yourselves a couple of days with nowhere else you need to be.

For the man who genuinely seems to have everything, this is particularly effective. He may already own most of the things he wants, but he doesn’t already have the memories you’re going to make next year.

9. SOMETHING FOR HIS HOME BAR, BBQ OR KITCHEN

If he loves cooking or entertaining, upgrade something he already uses rather than buying a giant novelty set full of things he never will.

A great chef’s knife, quality glassware, BBQ accessories, coffee equipment or something for a pizza oven can all work well if they match the way he actually lives.

We’d generally choose one excellent item over a hamper containing 15 mediocre ones. The goal isn’t to make the present look enormous under the tree. It’s to give him something he’ll still be using next Christmas.

10. A FRAGRANCE YOU KNOW HE’LL ACTUALLY WEAR

Fragrance can be a great Christmas gift, but it’s personal enough that we wouldn’t recommend blindly choosing whatever bottle is currently being advertised.

Look at what he already wears. If his favourite bottle is nearly empty, replacing it is the safest option. If you want to introduce something new, use the fragrances he already likes as your starting point.

That way, you’re still surprising him without spending a decent amount of money on something that ends up permanently decorating the bathroom shelf.

11. SOMETHING PERSONALISED THAT ACTUALLY MEANS SOMETHING

Personalised gifts can be incredibly meaningful when the personalisation itself has a reason to exist.

A restored family photograph, framed map of somewhere important, artwork of a family home, a beautifully presented family recipe or something connected to his children can become a genuine keepsake.

We’d stay away from putting his name on something simply for the sake of calling it personalised. The best version of this gift should make sense only for the person receiving it.

That’s particularly powerful for dads and grandfathers because the gift can connect their past with the family they have around them today.

12. TICKETS TO SOMETHING HE ALREADY LOVES

Concert tickets, sport, comedy, theatre, festivals and racing all have one major advantage as Christmas gifts: Christmas Day is only the beginning of the present.

There’s something great about opening an envelope in December and immediately having something to look forward to in February, March or six months later.

Buy two tickets and it also becomes time together, which is often more valuable than the event itself.

13. AN UPGRADE TO SOMETHING HE USES ALL THE TIME

This is one of the easiest gift-buying strategies and one people often overlook.

Instead of finding something completely new, identify something he uses constantly and buy him a much better version.

Maybe his gym bag is falling apart. His coffee machine has seen better days. His luggage survived one flight too many. His dressing gown should have been retired during the pandemic.

He might never justify replacing it himself because technically it still works. Christmas gives you the perfect excuse to do it for him.

14. SOMETHING FOR TRAINING, RECOVERY OR WELLBEING

If he already loves the gym, running, cycling or sport, something that supports that interest can make an excellent gift.

It could be quality training gear, recovery equipment, a massage, a better gym bag or something related to the sport he already participates in.

There is one important distinction here. Don’t buy a man fitness equipment because you think he should start exercising. Buy it because exercise is already something he enjoys. Those are two very different Christmas presents.

15. SOMETHING HE LOVES BUT WOULD NEVER BUY FOR HIMSELF

This might be the best gift-buying rule on this entire list.

Pay attention to the things he likes but can never quite justify buying for himself. It might be an expensive restaurant, a beautiful jacket, premium luggage, a massage, something for his car or an unnecessarily fancy version of something he already owns.

We all have things we look at and think, “I’d love that, but I’m not paying that much for it.” That’s exactly why receiving it from someone else feels special.

WHAT DO YOU BUY A MAN WHO HAS EVERYTHING?

If he genuinely has everything, stop trying to find something he doesn’t own. You’ll drive yourself mad.

Instead, ask what you can give him that carries some meaning. That might be an experience, something personalised, time together, a connection to his family history or something that helps him preserve his own memories.

The man who has everything probably doesn’t need another object. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing meaningful left to give him.

WHAT DO YOU BUY A MAN WHO SAYS HE WANTS NOTHING?

Sometimes you should actually believe him.

When a man says he doesn’t want anything for Christmas, he may simply mean he doesn’t want more random stuff around the house just so there’s something for him to unwrap.

That’s when we’d lean towards experiences, books, consumables, meaningful gifts or something connected to an interest he already has.

You don’t need five presents under the tree. One thing that shows you really know him can be enough.

WHAT’S A GOOD CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR DAD?

This is obviously the question that hits closest to home for me.

I spent years thinking about what I could give my dad. Now I find myself thinking more about what I’d like to know about him.

What was he actually like at 20? What did he think his life would look like? What scared him? What did he get wrong? What is he most proud of? Who influenced him before I was around to see it?

We spend our whole childhood knowing our parents as Mum and Dad and sometimes forget they had entire lives before us.

That’s why I think gifts involving memories, stories and time together become more valuable as we get older. A journal, photo book, experience together or even a book that starts a conversation can give you something much more valuable than another bottle sitting in the drinks cabinet.

WHAT’S A GOOD CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR A HUSBAND OR BOYFRIEND?

Pay attention to what he talks about but never quite buys.

Most people constantly leave clues about what they want. It might be the restaurant he keeps mentioning, the shoes he keeps looking at, a weekend away you’ve talked about for six months, something for a hobby or an old item he keeps complaining about but never replaces.

Good gift buying often has less to do with how much you spend and more to do with whether you were listening.

HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU SPEND ON A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR HIM?

There is no correct amount, and we’d be wary of any gift guide that tells you otherwise.

A thoughtful $40 gift can mean far more than a $400 present that has nothing to do with the person receiving it. Set a budget you can comfortably afford and focus on choosing well within it.

Christmas shouldn’t become a competition to prove how much you care by spending more money.

HOW WE CHOSE THE GIFTS ON THIS LIST

We didn’t want to create another Christmas gift guide filled with dozens of random products simply because they could generate a click.

We approached the list the same way we’d approach buying for the men in our own lives and asked one basic question: would we actually give this to someone we care about?

The gifts that made the cut generally do at least one of four things. They’re genuinely useful, create an experience, connect with something the person already loves, or carry some meaning beyond the day they’re opened.

And yes, one of the recommendations is something we make ourselves. We’re proud of The Journal, but we’d rather tell you exactly why it’s here than pretend our own product somehow independently won first place in our own Christmas gift guide.

THE BEST CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR MEN ARE PERSONAL

Writing this guide actually brought me back to my dad and the problem I started with.

For years, I was trying to answer the question, “What can I buy him?” I think there’s a better question: “What can I give him that he’ll actually value?”

Sometimes that will be tickets to see his favourite team. Sometimes it will be something for the hobby nobody else understands. It could be a weekend away, a great book with a handwritten message inside or something completely indulgent that he'd never buy for himself.

And sometimes the gift can become something bigger than the object itself.

When I think about giving my dad a journal now, I don't just see a book sitting under the Christmas tree. I think about a story he might write in it one Sunday afternoon. Something about his childhood that I've never heard before. Maybe years later I'll read that story again, or my kids will.

And suddenly a Christmas present has become part of our family history.

That's the kind of gift we're interested in at Memoirs By Him.
